How to Make it Easier for Listeners to Review Your Podcast on iTunes

When launching a new podcast, reviews help you hit top of the lists on iTunes. It’s a metric a lot of podcasters strive for and others just don’t care for.

This article is geared towards those of you who care.

Today I’m going to show you a little URL hack that will help listeners efficiently and quickly review your podcast without having to go look for the review section of your podcast on iTunes.

Unfortunately Apple has changed their minds on how they approach the quick access to reviews, so this little neat trick unfortunately does not work anymore. Sorry about the disappointment. – Updated 23 July 2015

Currently most podcasters just point you in the direction of iTunes and ask you to review their show. Now for those of you who know what it’s about, it comes naturally. For those of you who have never done it before, it’s a tedious task of finding the right avenue.

Let me show you how to make it easier for your listeners to review your podcast on iTunes.

Step 1

First off, you need a podcast, it has to be live on iTunes otherwise this won’t work. I’m going to be using the So Money podcast by Farnoosh Torabi as an example. Head over to the iTunes page that contains your podcast as seen below.

step1

Step 2

Identify your podcast ID which can be seen in the current browser header as part of your URL. In this case, the So Money Podcast ID is: 955939085

step2

Step 3

I’m introducing to you a new URL which you need to slightly modify with your podcast ID. This will enable listeners to directly head to the review section of your podcast. All you need to do is replace the below mentioned, “YOUR PODCAST ID HERE,” part with your ID.

Example URL

https://itunes.apple.com/review?id=YOUR PODCAST ID HERE&type=Podcast

New URL

https://itunes.apple.com/review?id=955939085&type=Podcast

Step 4

This newly formed URL can now be used in links or buttons, that is up to you. What it will efficiently do is to direct your listeners where you want them to go. Give it a try below by clicking on the image that will take you to the So Money Podcast review section on iTunes.

step4

Conclusion

As you can see this is a quick URL hack that will help you save time and direct your users wherever you want them to go. As an additional step you could also use an URL cloaker to mask the long, terrible looking URL with something better looking. I have mine setup as: http://www.jacquesvh.com/itunesreview. It’s up to you. Have fun.

  1. I gave this a try and after taking the new updated url that should send me to a review page I got this page instead, http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Also, when I click the image to review the podcast that you have shared here it does the same thing.

Seems that if iTunes is not downloaded then sending anyone to this link isn’t doing any good.

Any insights or suggestions on this?

    1. Hi Tony,

It seems that Apple has changed their approach to getting to reviews faster and done away with this feature. Sucks quite a bit, but they are in control.

Sorry for the disappointment on this.

  2. Hey Jacques! I tried this awesome hack but it doesn’t seem to be working well. On mobile it takes you straight into the regular landing for opening a podcast (which seems to be ok as long as you directed someone to then click the “review tab), but on desktop it isn’t quite working…

    Any insight?

    Thanks for the handy tip!

    1. Hi Kendra,

So it seems that Apple has done away with this form of getting to the reviews page faster. I have updated the article to reflect that they have changed their approach.

      Sorry about this.
      Jacques
